BIKANER CITY GUIDE

History of Binaker goes dates back to 1488 A.D. when a Rathore Prince, Rao Bikaji- a desendent of the founder of Jodhpur(1459 A.D.), Rao Jodhaji, established his kingdom here. Rao Jodhaji had five sons but Rao Bikaji was the most enterprising of them. Bikaji chose a barren wilderness called 'Jangladesh' and trandormerd it to an impressive city, called Bikaner after the founder's name. The city is renowned for the best riding camels in the world. The ship of the desert is an inseparable part of life here. Be it pulling heavy carts, transporting grains or working on wells, camels are the prime helpers. Water wells of Bikane are important source of water.

Touris Attractions of Bikaner:
Junagarh Fort: An architectural splendor, built by Akbar's contemporary Raja Rai Singh. Within the fort are thirty seven palaces, pavilions Suraj Pol or the Sun Gate is the main entrance to the fort. The palaces worth visiting are Chandra Mahal, Phool Mahal and Karan Mahal. The palaces, exquisitely built in red sandstone and marble are ornate with mirror work, carvings and paintings. An array of kiosks and balconies embellish the fort at intervals, breaking the monotony. A museum with valuable miniature paintings and rare antiques is also located in the Junagarh Fort

Lalgarh Palace: The magnificent fort in red sandstone, a fascinating juxtaposition of the Oriental style and European luxury that leaves you truly mesmerized. Designed by Sir Swinton Jacob for Maharaja Ganga Singh almost -90 years ago, this is an extraordinary monument. The palace has a billiards room, a library, a cards room and a smoking room. Belgian chandeliers cut - glass ornaments, oil paintings and lamps add to its charm.

Bhandeshwar Jain Temples: (5 km) Beautiful 16th century Jain temples, dedicated to the 23rd Tirthankar Parshvanathji. Camel Breeding Farm & Research Centre: It is one of the major attractions of your Bikaner Tours. It is situated at the distance of around 8 km from the Camel Country - Bikaner. It is only one of its kinds in all over in Asia. Managed by the Central Government, the Camel Breeding Farm & Research Centre extends over 2000 acres of semi-parched land.

Gajner Wildlife Sanctuary: situated 32kms from Bikaner on Jaisalmer road. It is considered as the prettiest place in the region, with a lake, a palace, wooded hills and gardens. The lake at Gajner attracts water birds in thousands.

Camel Breeding Farm: A unique experience where you can ride on a camel & have perhaps the first taste of camel's milk

Rat Temple at Deshnokh: The Karni Mata temple is situated 30 kilometers from city of Bikaner, is dedicated to an early fifteenth century mystic who was considered to be a reincarnation of goddess Durga. Devotees offer milk, grains and sweets to these rats during the time of aarti. Sighting a white mouse (Kaba in local language) is considered to be auspicious. It is believed that the Maharaja of Bikaner had a vision in which the goddess asked him to protect the rats and for this reason, there is bronze wiremesh across the temple. The domes of the temple are made of silver and gold. The manadap and the panels above the image are also golden. Devotees place offerings in silver and gold when their prayers are answered. The elaborate works on the main gate of the temple is a tribute to the fine craftsmanship of the artisans of those days. On the occasion of Navratri, this temple hosts a fair which attracts hordes of pilgrims from all over Rajasthan and India.
