There is a huge Mahabodhi Temple Complex, where most of the devotees visit and pass time in peace and tranquil surrounding.

For Buddhists people; Bodh Gaya is the most significant pilgrimage site because it is the centre and birth place (in terms of enlightenment and wisdom) of Mahatma Buddha. Because of having the Mahabodhi Temple Complex, Bodh Gaya is declared as UNESCO World Heritage Site in the year 2002.

As per the historical record, during the period of 500 BC, Prince Gautama Siddhartha while wandering in search of wisdom reached the sylvan bank of the Phalgu River located nearby Gaya city. Here Siddhartha found a big tree (popularly known as Bodhi Tree), under which he sat on meditation. After three days and three nights meditation, Siddhartha attained enlightenment. Thereupon, he spent seven weeks at seven different places in the nearby areas to recognize his experience. Finally, he reached Sarnath where he gave his first sermon and also started teaching of Buddhism.

Moreover, at present, Bodh Gaya has various Buddhist temples and monasteries, which have been constructed by the people of China, Japan, Taiwan, Bhutan, Thailand, Myanmar, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Tibet and Vietnam. These Bodhi Temple and Monasteries have been built and internally adorned with their respective country’s architectural style. There are also some of the schools run by Japanese, Thailandians etc to teach Buddhism in their languages. Children have been taught here the school lesson along with Buddhism Philosophy right from the beginning.
