Located in northern part of West Bengal and Eastern part of India, Darjeeling is pretty popular hill station of the state West Bengal. By virtue of its location on Mahabharta Range (part of lesser Himalaya), it has wonderful landscapes.

The development of the city was largely done by British administration; Arthur Campbell, a surgeon with the Company, and Lieutenant Robert Napier were two British people who made effort to establish this hill station. Campbell also made effort to develop the station that simultaneously would attract immigrants to cultivate on the fertile slope of Himalaya; these activities finally increased the trade. Likewise, Darjeeling hill station developed manifold largely during the years 1835 to 1849. Even today, you can see major buildings and architecture are of British age. Primarily, under the British rule, a military base had been established here. Further, the expansion of tea plantation made the region very popular. One of the most high quality teas namely ‘Black Tea’ is being produced here and it is popular as ‘Darjeeling Tea’.

With the temperate climate, Darjeeling hill is the part of Mahabharata Range (Lesser Himalaya); its average altitude is about 2,050 metres from the sea level. The region is also rich in terms of its flora and fauna. So, the Hill Station Darjeeling has various features that fascinate tourist from all around the world.

Darjeeling Tourism

One of the most popular tourists’ Hill Stations of India, Darjeeling has dozens of tourist’s sites; important of them are:

• Tiger Hill: Located at the altitude of about 2,590 m, it is popular point to see sunrise and sunset; during the sunrise time, one of the highest peaks of the world Kanchenjunga appears beautiful.

• Observatory Hill: This is the place known for the two religious faiths namely Hindu and Buddhist.

• Batasia Loop: It is quite interesting railway loop of about 5 km that make tour of Darjeeling. It is a toy train.

• War Memorial: It is a popular landmark in Darjeeling built in the remembrance of the fighter who died for the independence of India.

• Mall Road: Most of the shopping centres of Darjeeling are located along the Mall Road. Besides, you can also have the view of scenic landscapes of Darjeeling from the Mall Road.

• Japanese Peace Pagoda: Located in a beautiful environment, Japanese Peach Pagoda is built by Japanese Monk.

• Dhirdham Temple: It is a beautifully architected temple in Darjeeling.

• Tea Gardens in Darjeeling: Located in picturesque landscape, walking in the Tea Garden is quite exciting.

• Ghoom Monastery: Built in the year 1875, it is one of the oldest Tibetan Monasteries; it is also known as Yogachoeling Gompa.

• Drukpa Kargyud Monastery: It is quite big and popular monastery of Darjeeling.

• Darjeeling Museum: It has the great collection of fauna of the Great Himalayan Region.

• Himalayan Zoological Park and Snow Leopard Breeding Centre: It is one of the high altitude parks largely known for Himalayan Black Bear, Barking Deer and a few number of Tigers.

• Lloyds Botanical Garden: This garden has great collection of Himalayan rhododendron and various other Himalayan fauna.

• Padmaja Naidu Himalayan Zoological Park: This Park is largely known for the snow Leopard, Tibetan Wolf and Red Panda.

• Himalayan Mountaineering Institute: It is the institute that teaches the techniques of mountaineering. It is an exciting place for the people who love mountaineering.

Adventure Tourism in Darjeeling

• Trekking: Darjeeling is very good place for Trekking; interestingly, while trekking you can see varieties of rhododendrons, magnolias, orchids, bamboos and many other faunas.

• River Rafting: Rafting in Darjeeling is quite breathtaking experience.

• Ropeway Tour: Tour of Darjeeling through ropeway is quite thrilling; you can see the real Himalayan Mountain View.

How to Reach??

By Road: Darjeeling is well connected by the road namely NH 55. You can take bus or hire private vehicle from the nearby towns namely New Jalpaiguri or Siliguri. Darjeeling is located at the distance of about 88 kms from New Jalpaiguri and about 77 kms from Siliguri.

By Rail: The nearest railway stations from Darjeeling are New Jalpaiguri and Siliguri. These two railway stations are well connected with various major cities of India; so, you can enjoy train journey from New Delhi, Howrah and many other cities of India (which are comfortable for you) and after reaching either New Jalpaiguri or Siliguri, you need to take bus or hire small private vehicle to reach Darjeeling.

Interestingly, a narrow gauge railway namely Darjeeling Himalayan Railway also runs between Darjeeling and New Jalpaiguri; it really used to be very much interesting to travel through the narrow gauge railway. Since, it is one the unique and highest railway system of the world; therefore, in the year 1999, Darjeeling Himalayan Railway is declared as World Heritage Site by UNESCO.

By Air: Bagdogra is the nearest airport located at the distance of about 90 kms from Darjeeling.
