Located in the western region, Jaisalmer is nicknamed “The Golden City” of Rajasthan. Situated in the middle of Thar Desert, the town is crowned by forts and palaces. Jaisalmer has also several Jain temples.

The town is founded by Maharawal Jaisal Singh in the year 1156 AD and hence, its name is also kept as Jaisalmer after its founder’s name. Since, the city town is largely constructed of yellow sandstone, therefore, sometimes it is also known as ‘Golden City of India’.

Located nearby the international border of India and Pakistan in western part of India amidst Thar Desert, Jaisalmer has arid climate and it receives least rainfall. With maximum temperature of 500 C, the summer season used to be very hot; however, winter is mild.

Jaisalmer Fort: Located on Meru Hill, it is one of the popular forts of Rajasthan. It was built by Rajput ruler Jaisal in the year 1156. Constructed of sandstone walls it appears like a lion color during the day time and surprisingly, after sunset it turned as honey-gold color. In addition, other attractions of fort are Royal Palace and Temples.

Jain heritage of Jaisalmer: The town Jaisalmer is the centre of Jain community; because of this reason, you can have the look of various Jain temples.

By Road: The desert town Jaisalmer is well connected with various cities of Rajasthan with well maintained road. You can take bus from Jaipur, Ajmer, Bikaner and various other cities of Rajasthan. However, buses are also available from national capital New Delhi.

By Rail: Jaisalmer is also connected with Railway; there is Jaisalmer Railway Station linked directly with various major and minor cities of Rajasthan as well as with New Delhi.

By Air: The nearest airport to Jaisalmer is Jodhpur airport located at the distance of about 300 kms. However, you can take flight for Jaipur and from where you are needed to take bus or hire private vehicle.
