Further, earlier the city was known with the name of 'Calicut' and it was first explored by the Portuguese traveller Vasco da Gama in the year 1498. After this date, city has developed as port city and started trading with the European and other Arabian countries.

It is interesting to share that the word Kozhikode has been most likely derived from 'koyil' and 'kota;' the meaning of the word is "fortified palace." Further, the city has large area of marshy land; therefore, sometimes, it is also called as 'Chullikkad,' which means 'shrubby jungle.' The economy of city largely runs upon the spices trade, boat-building yard, and timber industry.
