Located in the middle of Thar Desert, in Jodhpur district of Rajasthan, Osian city is popular for its historic temples. The ancient town is pretty famous for its ruined Jain and Brahmanical temples. Most of these temples had been constructed during the period of 8th to 11th century. Architecture and paintings of Osian temples are so beautiful that people call it Khajuraho of Rajasthan.

Situated about 65 kms north from Jodhpur, the historic town was important religious centre of the kingdom of Marwar during the period of Gurjara Pratihara dynasty. At present, Osian is a small town-cum-village popular as the Jainism pilgrimage centre. The popular Mahavira Temple located in Osian was constructed during the period 783 AD, which was built by Vatsaraja, the Gurjara Pratihara King.

Among the Hindu temples, the temple of Hindu goddess Osiyan Mata is pretty popular, which is also the temple of Jains. In addition, the wonderful Mahavira Temple has stunning architecture; it has also sculpture of intertwined snakes, it is also worshiped by Oswal Jains. It is the evidence that major part of the region was also command by nagas. However, Nagabhata II was the Pratihara ruler of Mandore located nearby Jodhpur.

How to Reach??

By Road: Located merely at the distance of about 65 kms from Jodhpur, Osian is well connected with National Highway 11. So, from Jodhpur, it is about one and half hour journey by road.

By Rail: The nearest railway station is Osian Railway Station itself, which is directly linked with various major cities of Rajasthan.

By Air: Though, the nearest airport is Jodhpur airport; however, the Jaipur airport is more functional and linked with several major towns of India.
