Located in the eastern part of the state, Shillong is the capital of Meghalaya. Geographically, located on the top of the hill at the altitude of about 1,500 metres above the sea level, Shillong has spectacular landscapes. Interestingly, the rolling hills all around the town remind the European settlers of Scotland. This is the reason that the city is also popular as "Scotland of the East."

During the decade of 1860s, the city had made the civil station for the tribes Khasi and Jaintia; resultantly, the city had been developed exponentially. In addition, because of amazing location and pleasant weather, the city was the capital city of undivided Assam; however, when Assam and Meghalaya separated as two independent states, it came in the jurisdiction of Meghalaya and became the capital of Meghalaya.
