Over 150, years ago, Darjeeling was established as ‘ Health
Station’, after the Sikkim ruler gifted it to the British.
It grew into one of the most famous hill stations in India, regularly
drawing people for its cool climate, the fantastic backdrop of some
of the highest snow – clad peaks of the Himalayas, and a very
gracious life- style. Not only did people flock to Darjeeling (
The Land Of The Celestial Thunderbolt), to escape the heat of the
plains during the summer months, but also to celebrate winter. Though
Darjeeling has a great deal to offer all round the year, the most
popular periods – the Season – are from April to June,
and from September to December. The neglected Rainy Season has its
own unique charms with mists and clean landscapes giving a totally
different perspective to Darjeeling’s Delights.
There has been a revival of sorts during the last few years which
has resulted in some change for the better. There has been a general
up-gradation of the Hotel product with better facilities and accommodation.
The ‘Toy Train’ is said to be all set to steam into
World Heritage.
Darjeeling has special delights in store for people with special
interest including Nature, photography, trekking, tea, botany,
ornithology and the arts. The annual Teesta Tea & Tourism
Festival is held in winter in conjunction with the Dooars and
Sikkim.
