Gwalior - an ancient capital of Gwalior has nowt made a
successful transition into a modern Indian vibrant and bustling
city. It's legendary beginning started meeting between a warror
Suraj Sen and Gwalipa, who lived on the hilltop where Gwalior
fort stands today. Over the centuries, Gwalior became a city of
immense importance and was a continual scene of intrigue and clashes
with neighbouring powers. It's stratigic location was patronised
by many mighty rulers, making it the birthplace of many dynasties,
each leaving its own indelible mark over the city.
Gwalior Fort - Over 100 years old fort is over looking
the city of Gwalior. One of the most invincible forts in India,
Iimposing citadel has changed many hands in the past but has rarely
been captured.
Sun Temple -: believed to have been constructed within
the area of the fort. Also visit Man Mandir which is a six towered
palace & which forms the eastern wall of the fort. The fort
has monuments dating back to 8th century AD onwards & is one
of the largest forts in India.
Gujri Mahal - a turreted palace of stone now houses the
archaeological museum. Gwalior also offers the Tomb of Muhammed
Ghaus, a saint worshipped by the Mughals & the Tomb of the
famous musician Tansen.
Tomb of Tansen - Father of classical music and one of
the nine singers in Akbar's court has been buried in this cityr.
This Tomb is a part of Gwalior's cultural heritage where music
festival is held every year during the month of November / December
and attracts singers and musicians from all over India.
Jai Vilas Palace - Built in 1809 and house of present
Maharaja of Gwalior. This Palace is famous for its ornate chandeliers
& crystal. A few of the rooms have in converted into a museum
filled with the Scindia dynasties memorabilia.
Ghaus Mohammed Meusoleum - Situated in Old Town. Ghaus
Mohammed was a Afghan Prince turned sufi saint who helped Babur
to win the Gwalior fort. His mausoleum is designed on early Mughal
architectural lines.
