This sacred town, 52 Kms. from Dehradun in Uttrakhand state, marks
the emergence of the Ganga into the plains piercing through the
Shivalik Range. The devout believe that this is the one of the
four places in India upon which the nectar of immortality, amrit,
fell. It has been churned out of the formless ocean and was being
carried in a Kumbha pot when it spilt. On the zodiacal anniversary
of this event, a huge religious fair, the Kumbha Mela is held
here every twelve years when hundreds of thousands of devotees
bathe in the Ganga. Every six years the Ardh (half) Kumbha is
held.
The River Ganga leaves the mountains and enters the plains at
Hardwa. Haridwar is first town on the plains. Though the Ganges
does not lose its rapids completely but it becomes very quite
and calm in Haridwar. People take bath at the varios ghats built
on its shores. It is believed that taking bath here purifies the
soul and opens the way for the ultimate freedom, Nirvana. Hardwar
is also a source of Ayurvedic medicines for ages now and has been
providing herbal remedies. With Rajaji Park in the vicinity of
Hardwar has also been the destination for the wildlife and nature
lovers. The city become breath beautiful in the evening with thousands
of Diyas (lamps) and Marigold floating in the waters of Ganges
at the time of evening arati.
