Pushkar Camel Fair

Every year the small sleepy town of Pushkar in Rajasthan hosts a unique cattle fair in its sandy ground out side the town.

Locals of Rajasthan walk for weeks to reach the Pushkar festival with their cattle's, Camels, Horses, Bullocks, Goats and Sheep's for selling them during the cattle fair on attractive prices. During Pushkar Cattle fair Pushkar becomes trade center. As people come to sell their cattle's and same way others come to buy the one of their choice. Whole of fair ground remain full of cattle's and one can experience local life of the region at this fair ground as people move to Pushkar with families using camel carts, they cook here, eat here and spend life as they spend back at their village. One can see the live buying and selling here.

Whole of town turns into colorful shops. Ladies buy their lovely costumes, Bangles, Shoes, Utensils, Household stuff at the same time men enjoy buying beautifully painted sticks, Swords, leather products. During fair Pushkar becomes a live town full of cattle's and people.

Rajasthan Tourism department organizes some games including Camel Race, horse Race, best decorated camel award, Culture programs like Folk Dances, Folk Songs and even dancers of the state come here to make some money by entertaining the people with their art of dance.

As Pushkar does not have much of accommodation to accommodate incoming tourists, many local organizers put Luxury Tented Camps in Pushkar for a week's time with all modern facilities.

Last three days during Pushkar fair are more religious than normal. Last 2 days during full moon are auspicious and people come here to have holy dip into the waters of Holy Pushkar Lake, Hindus believe that having dip in the holy waters of the lake all their sins wash away.

Getting there
The picturesque Pushkar is set in a valley just about 14 kilometers off Ajmer in the north Indian state of Rajasthan. Surrounded by hills on three sides and sand dunes on the fourth, Pushkar forms a fascinating location and a befitting backdrop for the annual religious and cattle fair.

The Pushkar Lake

Legends say that Lord Brahma saw the demon Vajranabha trying to kill his children and creating problems for local people. Lord Brahma slew the demon with his weapon. While in action Lotus Patal fell from his hand on the ground at three places and three springs created three lakes (Pushkar Lake, Madya Pushkar and Kanishta Pushkar). Brahma came down to the earth and named the lake as Pushkar where Lotus had fell. Lord Brahma decided to perform a Yagna at this place but Savitri or Sarasvati; consort of Lord Brahma was not present at ritual time. Hence Brahma married Gayatri (Shepherd girl) to to complete Yagna. When Savitri arrived at Yagna Place, she swa Gayatri sitting next to Brahma where Savitri was suppose to be sitting. Seeing this Savitri cursed Brahma that he wold be worshipped only in Pushkar. Hence, Lord Brahma is worshipped only at Pushkar.

Pushkar lake is believed to be one of the most sacred lakes among Hindus. Hindus believe that a dip in Holy Pushkar lake on Kartik Purnima (Full moon day of the Kartik month) and worship Lord Brahma cleanses the soul and ensures salvation. Water of the holy lake washes away sins of lifetime and cures skin diseases. There are many temples located around the lake that add to the charm and mystique of this sacred town.

Bramha Temple
As per the Puranas, Lord Brahma is son of God and is referred as Prajapati. The Shatapatha Brahman believes that Lord Brahma was born of the Supreme being Brahman and female energy as Maya. To create the universe Brahma first created water and he placed his seed in the water. Seed transformed into a Golden egg and Lord Brahma appeared from this egg. Brahma is also known as “Hiranyagarbha” because of this reason. There is also another legend which says that Brahma is self bor from a Lotus Flower which grew from the Navel of Lord Vishnu.

The Creator of Universe Lord Brahma is has only Temple at Pushkar in Rajasthan where he is worshiped.

Savitri Temple
The Consort of Lord Brahma Savitri has a temple at Pushkar situated on Ratnagiri Hill top. According to Legends after cursing Brahma after seeing Gayatri alongwith Brahma performing Yagna, Savitri left for Ratnagiri Hill near by and immolated herself on this hill. The temple was built at this site and and has beautiful stutue of Goddess Savitri. Temple has now idols of both Savitri and Gayatri.

Camel and Horse Safari
Camel and Horse rides are some exciting activities one can take part in, at Puskar. The rides are provided by local population.
