Madhya Pradesh - India's
largest state - hot, dusty land locked expanse of scrub-covered
hills, sun -parched plains, dense tree-covered forests and deep
ravines with the river Narmada flowing through it.
This state offers a diverse array of exceptional attractions
such as ancient temples, hill-top forts and superb isolated wildlife
sanctuaries and reserves. The magnificent temples at Khajuraho,
best known for their representation of delicate sensuality and
eroticism are the most exquisite specimens of Hindu architecture.
Most of the tourist centers here have fairly good modern amenities,
including the far flung isolated pocket at Mandu. The old cities
of Bhopal and Gwalior have their own historical importance. You
can also visit the Udaigiri and the Bhimbetka- rock-cut caves
near Bhopal where you can see some of the prehistoric cave paintings.
The city of Gwalior hosts the palaces and other monuments of the
Scindia Rulers. The famous Stupa at Sanchi is a great attraction,
especially for Buddhist tourists from South East Asia. This spot
is replete with monuments considered the finest examples of Buddhist
creative art and sculpture. The site dates back to the 3rd century
B.C.
The Bandhavgarh and Kanha National Parks are the finest wildlife
reserves abound with a variety of species. They are most famous
for viewing the white tigers of Rewa. Mandu, a medieval ghost
township set against the rugged back-drop of the Vindhya hills,
presents one of the most atmospheric historical monuments. The
place echoes with legends of love of the poet - Prince Baz Bahadur
with his beautiful consort Rani Roopmati.
Come monsoons, and the rocky plateau gets carpeted with green
vegetation, making the environs a visual delight. On your visit
to India, do not miss a tour to this enchanting valley.
