Andaman and Nicobar Islands

Located in the Bay of Bengal, Andaman and Nicobar Islands are a group of Islands. It is one of the Union Territories of India. Geographically, it is located in the east of India and separated by Thailand and Myanmar by Andaman Sea.

However, the Andaman and Nicobar Islands are group of more than 570 islands; among which only about 38 larger islands are permanently inhabited. With its capital at Port Blair, Andaman Island and Nicobar Island are the largest one; however, both of these islands are separated by Ten Degree Channel.

Andaman & Nicobar Islands are covered by tropical rainforest canopy; furthermore, largely, the islands are adorned with wet evergreen type of forest; but vegetation varies with the islands from moist deciduous to evergreen. And, the overall forest area covers more than 86% of total land area. In addition, it has about 50 varieties of forest mammals including Andaman Wild Boar and Rodents.

Historically, the islands have been inhabited for thousands of years past. However, the earliest archaeological evidence that has been documented till now goes back to some 2,200 years past. On the other hand, genetic and cultural studies suggest that the indigenous Andamani people may have been isolated from other populations during the period of the Middle Palaeolithic. Over the period of time, the Andamanese have diversified into distinct ethnic, cultural, linguistic and territorial groups. In the last, it was occupied by British but after independence of India, it has been incorporated as Union Territory of India.

How to Reach:

Andaman & Nicobar Islands can be reached either by air or by sea route. It is located at the distance of about 1200 km from Chennai (sea route distance) and 1255 km from Kolkata. The ship journey takes about 60 hours. However, passenger ships are available from Chennai (Tamil Nadu), Kolkata (West Bengal) and as well as from Vishakapatnam (Andhra Pradesh). The frequency of ships from Chennai and Kolkatta are four times in a month and from Vishakapatnam only once in a month. And, flights are also available from Kolkata and Chennai.
