This state is the proud guardian of India's marvel in stone,
the Taj Mahal. Lucknow's Residency, Bara Imambara, Chota Imambara,
are other star attractions. Memorable places to visit are the
historic cities of Jhansi; the pilgrim towns of Varanasi, Allahabad,
Mathura-Vrindavan, Haridwar and Rishikesh, Buddhist centres like
Sarnath.
'Haridwar', literally meaning the door to the almighty, is a
small but very important pilgrim town of the Hindus. The spot
is abound with several temples and Ashrams, mostly placed along
the sacred river Ganges. Despite the hoards of people who visit
this place, Haridwar maintains a distinct tranquility. About 24
kms away from Haridwar lies Rishikesh, another immemorial pilgrim
town. This town is the starting point for higher reaches of the
Himalayas. The Ganges that flows through seems to purify everything
along its course, providing peace and serenity not only to visitors
but the entire ambiance itself.
The unrivalled beauty of the UP hills is but the dream of any
romantic. The state also houses the enchanting hills of Kumaon
and Garhwal. Lush pine forests and soft green meadows make this

Kausani and Binsar act as ideal holiday resorts.
The Kathak dance style, nurtured in Uttar Pradesh, is the most
popular form of classical dance in India. Old centres of learning
- Varanasi, Allahabad, Lucknow - were local points for classical
music and dance. Hindustani classical music has also grown on
this part of the land.
The handicraft industry of UP is also well developed. It is famous
for carpet weaving; handprinting; for chikanwork (a type of embroidery);
for metal enameling; for brocade and brassware and for its ebony
