Vastu Shastra or Architectonics is the science of Architecture of Ancient India. Hindus were not acquainted with the practice of building, but posed scientific works on the subject which are referred to and observed by living traditional practitioners and are 'Sthapathies' of Tamil Nadu and 'Somapuras' of Gujarat. They are collectively known as Bharatiya Vastu Shastra. Vastu Shastra contribute to a good part of Sanskrit literature of Ancient India. The three important access to Vastu Shastra are in Tamil, Sanskrit and French Languages culture.

An ocean of knowledge about Shilpa Shastra was locked up. Then with the English education, Hindus themselves looked down upon them as superstitions. Vastu Shastra is an art, a science and it is a part and parcel of Hindu Religion. It is a culture that germinated on Indian soil, lived through the ages of wars, racial making and natural calamities, with its wonderful examples standing on the earth attracting attention of scholars from abroad and with their beauty of proportion and with their inner meanings attached.

Why one should plan?
All cosmological creations are planned out in units with order, rhythm, symmetry and proportions thus the truth for that 'for an orderly, useful, peaceful, beautiful life, planning is required' is embedded. According to surya siddhanta earth is planned out as Sumeru or Ghana Bhumi (Northern Hemisphere) and Kumeru or Thamo Bhumi (Southern Hemisphere). The globe has in it seven islands divided by seven great oceans. Bharat Kanda in Sumeru is divided into 4 parts:

Uttara Patham
Hira Varsham
Arya Vartam and
Dakshina Patham
Each again is planned by shastra into:

Rastram
Puram
Gramam
Mangalam
Haram etc.
And they all consists of harmyas with detailed out rooms, doors and steps in it. Beds, Swings, Seats and Ornaments etc which occupy the room as they are also to be desired according to written down tradition and nothing was arbitrary or superfluous, or left to the fancy or egocentricity of a designer. As an art it is aimed to be evolved in such a manner to give an aesthetic experience through sight, touch, sound etc. Visual aspect of creation is important. Directly and indirectly Vastu Shastra aims at the uplift of the quality of man's soul, mind and body.
With the physical comfort and security created inside the designed space, with and pouter beauty, clean and healthy surroundings, Vastu Shastra set forth the highest goal - that is to have an experience of bliss (ananda).

Basic Contents of Vastu Shastra
Architectonics deals with Architecture in secular / ecclesiastical and military architecture, and planning iconography as we understand it today. Thus in first place it denotes all kinds of buildings - religious, residential, military and auxiliary members and component buildings. Secondly it covers town planning, laying out gardens, constructing market places, ports, harbours, making bridges, roads gateways, triumphal arches, digging wells, tanks trenches for drains, towers, moats, building enclosure walls, embankments, railings, landing places, flight of steps for hills and bathing ghats (steps leading to water source like river or ponds) and ladders. Thirdly it covers articles of furniture such as bed steaps, ward robes, basket cases, nets, mats, conveyances, lamps, lamp posts for streets, chain, crowns, footwear and armwears. Architecture also includes sculpture and also civil engineering and site selection, soil testing, fixing of cardinal points by fixing sanku, dialing and astronomical and astrological calculations. This is a science dealing with earth and its effect on man in relation to his house the strength of the house has some invisible and inscrutable effect on making human efforts fruitful or fruitless. According to this part of vastu shastra the house is a great catalyst in our lives.

In many parts of India - especially in Kerala, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh and Orissa, still it is a tradition to consult a Vastu specialist when the people of these places builds a house for themself. Vastu specialist first  design those residents themselves and if not they will extend their advice in predicting the effects a house can give.

Climate and Architecture
If in a place of land, river flows towards south that site will always give rise to revolution. This is Vastu specialists general observation on Calcutta (now Kolkatta). The effect of structures on human psyche is something one can believe. Every structure creates its own field and the interactions of such fields one cannot calculate so instead of going into Vastu from scientific angle, we should view from evidential approach. The results are repeated at regular intervals without any reference to the individuals inherent ability and acquired skills. A good Vastu Shatric house gives the same results in any region or locality.
