Historically, known as 'Kamarupa' or 'Pragjyotish' especially during the period of the Epics, Assam is inhabited by human civilisation about 2000 BC ago from now. However, since that time, it had been ruled by various kingdoms and evidenced various ups and downs. However, at the present, the people of Assam are largely the migrants of Burma and China; hence, you can experience here the ‘Mongol-Aryan culture. With its ‘Tropical Monsoon Rainforest Climate’, Assam is pretty resourceful state of India. It has various natural resources such as petroleum, natural gas, coal, limestone and other minerals like magnetic quartzite, sillimanites, kaolin etc. On the other hand, the state is also rich in terms of its biodiversity; there are various species of flora and fauna. Some of the important species of state are Rhinoceros, Golden Langur, White-winged Wood Duck, Bengal Florican, Black-reasted Parrotbill, Pygmy Hog etc, other common species are tiger, elephant, hoolock gibbon, jerdon’s babbler and many more. Surprisingly, the state has about 820 species of birds, which is the highest number of birds’ species in India. It has also the highest number population of wild water buffalo in the world. Hence, to conserve and protect the wildlife, the region is protected as National Park and Wildlife Sanctuary.
